Sled Dog Racing

Sled Dog racing is the world's fastest growing winter sport and Scotland's where it's happening. There are over 150 competitive teams in Scotland comprising of Siberian Huskies; Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, Eskimo Dogs and purpose bred Eurohounds. These dogs are elite athletes as well as beloved pets, and they live to run. The sport takes place on Forest tracks (kinder on the dog's feet) and there are races and training areas from Dumfries and Galloway in the south to Invernesshire in the North.
The largest Sled Dog race in Europe takes place each January in Aviemore.
But surely you ask, you need snow? No, the dogs pull a 3 wheeled 'rig' on dry land.

Thanks to Steven Lindsay for supplying us with the facts.

Sled Dog Racing

Want to get started?

See the links below. There are over 400 Sled Dog teams in the UK and if you look hard enough there will be someone close by who trains who would be more than willing to show you what it¿s all about.
Very few kennels operate a dedicated team for taking out passengers in the UK due to the less favourable climatic conditions. However, individual mushers may be willing to let you have a go.
Be prepared for a fast and bumpy ride!

Where to go:

There has recently been a huge development in the mushing scene in Scotland. A new, dedicated Sled Dog training and racing area has been set up in Dumfries and Galloway and is set to have more than 5 races per year.
