Winter Mountaineering

Scotland's winter mountains offer a drama, a beauty and a challenge not found anywhere else in Britain. Transformed by snow and ice, in many parts for up to eight months a year, they are a world apart from the summer scene of verdant slopes and delicate mountain flowers. But, for the mountain enthusiast, no less irresistible!

Winter hillwalking and winter mountaineering are two of Scotland¿s most popular sports, offering an infinity of possibilities, from exploring the arctic nature of the Cairngorms¿ incredible high plateau, to tackling rocky ridges and snowy slopes right across the Highlands.

Thanks to Terry Adby and Stuart Johnston from climbmts for supplying us with the facts.

Want to get started?

The rewards of the winter hills, of course, are hard earned, and that means you¿ll need some skills and specialist equipment to get the most out of them. Above all, the risks of venturing into the Scottish winter mountains must never be underestimated.

Fortunately help is at hand in the form of a host of providers offering everything from dedicated winter mountain skills courses to guided expeditions in and amongst some of Scotland¿s most extraordinary winter landscapes.
