Skateboarding in Scotland continues to be a thriving activity, people of all ages can be found riding at the many skateparks and street spots that Scotland has to offer. Recent years have seen a real boom in the numbers of people riding and in general public interest and acknowledgement of the sport. This increased popularity has led to the construction of many new parks both large and small throughout Scotland.
Thanks to Derek Marshall at Factory Skatepark for supplying us with all the facts.

Want to get started?
If you're looking to start skateboarding then it's best to find a flat area of ground to get used to rolling around, pushing and turning. It's important to develop your balance on the flat ground before trying to ride ramps. Once you've got those basics down you can then move onto a skatepark. Some skateparks, particularly indoor ones such as The Factory have dedicated beginners' sessions with people on hand to give you helpful tips. Otherwise if you know when the skatepark is going to be quietest (it helps to ask!) then come back then so that you're not going to get in the way of a busy session, also other skaters will usually be happy to give you advice as well. Apart from that just keep skating, the more you skate the more confident you'll get and then you can't help but improve!
Where to go:
As well as parks and spots that have been here for years there has also been a real growth in skateparks in the last couple of years. Here's a sample-
East of Scotland
Dundee >
Perth >
West of Scotland

East of Scotland, Dundee
The Factory ¿ A commercial indoor wooden skatepark with a mixture of half-pipes and hybrid street obstacles. Great place for beginners, well supervised.
East of Scotland, Perth
An outdoor concrete park, one of the first of the new generation of concrete parks, great lines for cruising, plenty of stairs and ledges if that¿s your thing.
West of Scotland, Dumbarton
A commercial indoor wooden park with various halfpipes etc. Also host to the Red Bull vert ramp which is pretty much Scotland¿s only full size vert so well worth a visit.
West of Scotland, Blantyre
Outdoor concrete park, another of the new breed parks with bowls, hips, spine ramps, ledges and rails. Definitely one to visit.
West of Scotland
Livingston is an outdoor concrete park, it was built around 1981 at the end of the original skate-boom of the 70¿s. It is known the world over and has been visited by pro skaters from all over the world and is host to the `Livi Pure Fun Skate Party¿ every year. Definitely worth a visit!
