Kayak Surfing

For many the world of kayak surfing is specialised and sometimes misunderstood. It's an inspirational sport with a keen and talented following. The beaches and reefs around Scotland providing stunning backdrops to everything from family fun to committed training and competition. In the last few years these shores have produced no less than 3 World Champions!
If you're a kayaker who is new to the sport of surfing there is much to be learnt, and the process is exhilarating. Modern surf kayaks are designed to allow the pilot to ride a wave at high speed and in a similar way to a boardsurfer. If you're a kayaker who can handle themselves on a river or in a Sea Boat then the surf zone could be for you.

Thanks to Ian Sherrington, Senior Instructor and Head of Paddlesports, Glenmore Lodge for supplying us with the facts.

Want to get started?

The best place to get started is by surfing the web a little further. The Scottish Canoe Association's website provides a lot of specific info, a calendar of events and links to providers of courses.

www.scot-canoe.org/surf/SurfIndex.htm
There is also a well structured club scene that can be found on the same website.

Where to go:

North : Thurso and North Coast, Wick
East : Sandend, Aberdeen, Forth Estuary, Berwickshire coast.
West : Prestwick, Ayr, Troon, Western Isles, North West Coast

If your already a Kayak Surfer, and are coming to Scotland to play, then welcome! These coasts are blessed with many breaks, friendly locals, and some of the finest memories you're likely to collect!
Our breaks are for the most part quiet, particularly when the waves are at their largest in the winter months.

Those of you who are prepared to travel further North and West will be rewarded with both surfing and Scotland at it's best. The board surfers have very well collated information on individual breaks, and I would therefore encourage you to read their pages. The information relates very directly to kayakers.
It is worth saying however that for the more advanced breaks and reefs it is worth being cautious. A good example of this would be the reefs at Thurso.
