White Water Kayaking

At last, something great to do with all that rain! One group of sports enthusiasts positively revel in the wet stuff and can't wait for the heavens to open. When the rains come and the rivers come to life it's the kayakers who come out to play! These days a kayaker tackles the rapids in a one man kayak probably a little over 2 metres long. Made of tough plastic these boats are almost indestructible and they allow the paddler protected by helmet, body armour and buoyancy aid and wielding a fibreglass paddle to tackle steep and rocky rivers.

Thanks to the Scottish Canoe Association for supplying us with the facts

Want to get started?

First of all you need to master the basics on flat water before tackling your first river. Canoe clubs, outdoor centres and activity providers all provide a good way to get started. That way you won't end "up the creek", well¿. "without a paddle"

Where to go:

Where ever you find mountains and rain you will find whitewater.

River Tay
One of Scotland's most famous rivers offering good white water especially for an introductory level. Good conditions all year round.

River Etive
A short adrenaline filled trip featuring some beautiful waterfalls.

River Orchy
One of the best! Everything from easy water to stonking grade5. This river holds its water well and is a popular weekend destination.

River Findhorn
An East Coast classic, the highlight of the trip is the infamous Findhorn gorge. Good conditions can often be found in the spring as melting snow from the Monadhliath mountains boosts the flow.
