Rock Climbing in Scotland

The craggy landscape of weathered rock is home to a wide range of superb climbing opportunities in Scotland, from short roadside ascents to some of the very best 'alpine' routes to be found anywhere in the UK. There's even the hardest traditional rock climb in the world - 'Rhapsody' E11 7a - as climbed by prolific Scottish climber Dave MacLeod!

Where to go:

There are many excellent climbing locations here. Glen Coe is breathtaking and although it's worldwide fame might have more to do with ancient clan rivalries, it's also well-renowned as one of the UK's premier climbing areas and is very accessible from the main A82 road. Here you'll find Buachaille Etive Mor and the sprawling Bidean nam Bian massif. The diverse range of routes within these two contrasting mountain masses alone, makes Glen Coe a particularly popular choice.

Central Scotland, the Cairngorms and the North West Highlands also host some of the finest climbing crags. And there are classic island climbs, such as those on Skye's Cuillin Ridge or the Old Man of Hoy in the Orkney Islands.
