Set within the spectacular Glen Affric National Nature Reserve featuring the largest tract of ancient Caledonian pine forest in the UK. The duathlon has a challenging new course this year - with a new looped hill run of 7.5 miles ascending to a height of 1500 feet above sea level, but organisers promise the panoramic views of Glen Affric will make the ascent worthwhile! The cycle section is a 20-mile, off-road mountain bike ride on forestry tracks alongside Loch Beneavean, finishing with a 2.5-mile cross-country run following the rapids of the river Affric. The Talisker Trek

The makers of Talisker single malt Scotch whisky and the Woodland Trust are giving people the chance of a lifetime to take part in the first Talisker Trek.
Legendary explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, and latest sensation in the world of adventuring, Tom Avery, will take part in the challenge as well as rugby player Dean Richards, all of whom will be ready to share their wealth of expertise.
This guided adventure will be held on the Isle of Skye home to the Talisker distillery. Skye, with its rugged surroundings, offers the perfect backdrop for the trek and an opportunity to reconnect you with the natural elements of the countryside. The aim is to raise enough money over the next three years to plant � million new trees, in association with the Woodland Trust Charity.
This is a competitive event and teams will be awarded points from the start of the event on the Friday evening. The trek features activities such as highland games and tyre pulling.

Great Edinburgh International X Country

Maggie's Monster Bike & Hike

Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre's flagship fundraising event. This is a 24-hour event along the Great Glen Way, which runs between Fort William and Inverness and is the biggest and most challenging event to take place on the Way with around 1,000 competitors anticipated in 2007. Participants cycle 30 miles and then choose to walk 8 miles, 23 miles or 40 miles to complete their Monster at either Bronze, Silver or Gold level. Participants come from all over the UK. The event is supported by the Highland 2007 year of culture celebrations.

O'Neill Highland Open 2008

Returning to Scotland and the Highlands for the fourth consecutive year, the O'Neill Highland Open remains as a heat of the World Qualifying Series competition making it the biggest professional surfing event to be staged in the UK. From April 24 through to May 1 2008, 144 of the worlds top professional surfers will compete at the legendary Thurso East reef break for the coveted title and trophy sword.

BUPA Great Edinburgh Run

Scotland's premier 10 kilometre road running event, the BUPA Great Edinburgh Run, is expected to welcome over 10,000 runners of all abilities to Edinburgh, on Sunday 4th May 2008.

The city centre course will take in some of Edinburgh's most stunning scenery and landmarks including a run down Princes Street, past The Mound (running past the National Gallery), the Royal Mile, the Scottish Parliament Building and Holyrood Park.

The event starts and finishes in one of Edinburgh's best-known city centre parks - The Meadows.

Get Active Loch Lomond Festival

The Get Active festival returns to Loch Lomond Shores near Balloch at an earlier date in June and has lined up a whole host of activities, which will be taking place over the weekend of the 14 and 15 of June. Canoeing, mountain biking, wakeboarding, a 10 kilometre race and even an invitation to join an evening canoe trip, will be just some of the outdoor activities on offer.

This event allows you to try a new activity for the very first time, against a stunning backdrop of some of the UK's finest scenery, whilst experiencing one of the most famous stretches of water in the world.

Hebridean Challenge

The Hebridean Challenge is one of the toughest and most demanding adventure races in the world and takes place amidst the stunning setting of the Outer Hebrides - off Scotland's north-west coast.

It's a relay race using only human power to negotiate a course of up to 700 kilometres and although you have to have a modicum of fitness to take part 'a love of wild places' is often cited as being more important.

Over five days competing teams travel the length of the islands from Vatersay in the south to Lewis in the north with sections of hill running, road running, road and mountain biking, sea swimming and sea kayaking.

Dirty Weekend 2008

Dirty Weekend is a festival of adventure sports set in the stunning Scottish Borders and featuring some classic multi-sport event formats.

Choose from adventure racing (ACE Races - Sat and Sun), mountain biking (Polaris Challenge - Sat and Sun) or trail running (the 12km Dirty Dozen run - Sat, which organisers say is more Dad's Army than Saving Private Ryan!).

All the events are based around a bustling adventure village in the grounds of Traquair House, Scotland's oldest inhabited house.

NB. Access to Traquair House is not included in the event, however you can visit this fascinating attraction for a fee.

Merida MTB Marathon - Selkirk

The Merida Marathon descends on Selkirk in the Scottish Borders again and the superb course which incorporates some purpose-built tracks surrounding the Selkirk area, fantastic views and superb facilities at Selkirk Rugby club, makes this event one of the highlights of the series.

The 2008 event will be run in its usual format with registration, skills classes, pasta party and event village on Saturday, with the ride following on Sunday morning. As part of the entry fee, riders will have free parking and free access to facilities and camping.

This event is based on a 'taking part is everything' philosophy and this allows everyone to enjoy the physical challenge and the terrific scenery of the Scottish Borders. On the Sunday morning a mass start gets the whole event going and a paced zone at the beginning, allows everyone to find a comfortable position in the field to suit their ability and race ambitions.

3G Challenge

The 5th 3G Challenge will feature some changes over previous events. For the 2008 event, the route will be circular in nature, with a start/finish at Cannich Village Hall.

The route is also slightly shorter over the 2007 one, but if you liked the single-track from Tomich to Corrimony then the Eves Road will widen the grin. And it doesn?t stop there!

Also new for 2008, the 'Pre G'. If you're in the area on Friday 29 August, why not join the ?Pre G - Pasta in the Pub' at the Slater's Arms. Numbers are limited to 40 so please book early. This is a chance to meet up the night before, meet like-minded folks and get the carbs loaded!

Ben Nevis Race

Staged annually on the first Saturday of September, up to 500 hill runners race to the top of Ben Nevis, Britains Highest Mountain and race back down again!

The race is unlike any other with a 4,200 feet climb and then descent. The race is about 10 miles, from near sea level to 4,406 feet via road, rough track, grassy and scree slopes. This is a lung busting race for experienced hill runners.

A Winter Festival of Running

The Strathpuffer 24

The Strathpuffer 24 is the world’s only 24 mountain bike race held in winter conditions – 17 hours of darkness. It has been voted one of the world’s 10 toughest races by ‘Dirt’ magazine in the USA. This will be the fourth running of the event which has also been televised twice on BBC Scotland’s ‘Adventure Show’.

The downside is that rider numbers are reduced because of the severe limitations for parking on-site. There will be a total entry of 475, comprising 100 quad teams, 25 pairs and 25 solos.

The event will take place on 17/18 January 2009 and entries will open via the Strathpuffer website at noon on 5th November (remember..remember).

Fort William Mountain Festival

Wakeboarding is currently the fastest growing sport in the world. Even if you dont fancy getting wet, wakeboarding is a highly entertaining sport to watch even if you know nothing about it! It consists of the wakeboarders being towed one at a time by a boat and using the water behind it to jump off, performing flips, grabs and spins mid-air.

The Loch Stock wakeboard tour is now officially underway after the scenic shores of Loch Lomond played host to the first of three tour stops on 23rd and 24th May. While the typical Scottish weather deterred some, the Scots once again proved their dedication enduring strong winds and pouring rain for the majority of the Saturday.

The Original Bicycle Festival

The Original Bicycle Festival is a brand new festival of cycling, to be held in Dumfries & Galloway. From 9 to 24 May the packed programme will complement the World Mountain Bike Conference from 12 to 15 May in Dumfries. The Festival will celebrate the mountain bike and road cycling trails and rich cycling heritage of the south west of Scotland.

The 16 day Festival will promote access and participation in cycling in the region through an exciting programme of open mountain bike and road cycling events. The festival will cater for both residents and visitors alike; from families with children to youth groups and 'weekend warriors' to cycling commuters, the over 50's and those new to the sport but keen to have a go.

UCI Mountain Bike World Cup 2009

High speed, spectacular mountain biking is set to return to the slopes of the Nevis Range Ski Area in 2009 following the highly successful UCI Mountain Bike World Cup which took place in dry, hot and sunny conditions in June 2008. The '08 event attracted over 18,000 spectators who were thoroughly entertained by the downhill, 4X and cross country thrills and spills which this event has become world-renowned for.

The 2009 World Cup will take place on the world-class Aonach Mor tracks and will again attract riders and spectators from all over the world. The finish arena for all events is the World Cup Village at the Ski Area which provides amazing spectator viewing, with a palpable atmosphere, parking and catering. It's also hoped that the new red-graded downhill track which is currently being built will be open for the event too.

National Bike Week

Bike Week (guided by Nokia) in June is the UK's annual 'celebration of cycling' and it's coming to a town near you! Government-funded with support from the cycle industry, Bike Week aims to get 'more people cycling more often'. 250,000 participants are anticipated this year.

1,500 cycling events will be organised locally during the 13-21 June. Most are free to enter and many are suitable for novices and occasional cyclists. From easy traffic-free rides to time-trials for beginners, Bike Week offers something for everyone who owns a bike.

Corrieyairack Challenge

The ultimate hill walking, mountain biking or duathlon run and bike challenge. Follow in Bonnie Prince Charlie's footsteps on Scotland's highest mountain road.

This event is held every July and involves traversing a 17-mile hill section over the historic Corrieyairack mountain pass (2350ft), followed by a 26-mile road section heading toward Kincraig on Speyside. Runners, bikers, duathletes and joggers/walkers of all levels take part so consequently there's great camaraderie and mix between 'elites' and 'have a go's'.

The race starts at Fort Augustus close to the well-known abbey and after 2 tarmac miles to warm up, turns off and begins to climb the winding hill track of the Corrieyairack Pass - Scotland's highest mountain road once used by Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The Rat Race Urban Adventure Challenge

Encompassing core disciplines of cycling, hiking, running, canoeing, rope-work and some special urban challenges, competitors will participate in a 3-hour prologue on Saturday and then complete an 80-kilometre course over the Sunday.

Also, for the very first year, organisers of the Edinburgh Rat Race, are calling on all young multi-sport enthusiasts between the ages of 14 and 18 to sign up now for a new youth team event as part of Scotland's coolest urban adventure challenge.

Edinburgh will be transformed into a multi-sports playground with youth teams battling it out alongside elite adventure racers for the very first time. The young guns will take part in a range of physical and mentally challenging activities including navigation, endurance, mental agility, running, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking and abseiling.

Number three of the Three Tens series sees a foray by the No Fuss Events team, into the north-east of Scotland. This event is based at Milne's High School in Fochabers and takes in much of the Moray Monster mountain bike trails at Ordequish Woods.

The climbs are just enough of a test and the excitement of the single-track trails like the 'Haggis' and the 'Soup Dragon' will put a smile on the face of any off road rider.

Again participants can compete as a solo or in relay teams of two, three or four. The race is an endurance format with teams and individuals competing to see who can complete the most laps in the 10 hours. The usual fomat shared with the other two in the series applies with the party scheduled post race on the Saturday night!

Barnardo's Cairngorm Challenge

For the past two years the Barnardo's Cairngorm Challenge has been a gruelling 50km through some of Scotland’s most amazing scenery. It has included 2 sections, a 15 km hike to the top of Cairngorm Mountain (a Munro), followed by a 35 km bike ride through Glenmore and Abernethy Forests.

However, this year there will be an option to challenge yourself even further. The challenge will be divided into three disciplines/levels, Gold, Silver and Bronze. Therefore there will be something to suit all levels of fitness!

Bealach Mhor Challenge

This is a cycling event open to competitors of all standards who ride to achieve the best time they can or in many cases, simply to finish. It is not a race. The cycle route chosen is popular with many local riders who appreciate both the strenuous climbs and stunning views.

The event, which starts and finishes in Kinlochewe takes in a route of 140kms and involves 3000 metres of ascent. The route goes over the Bealach-na-Ba or Bealach nam Bo (Pass of the Cattle), the UK’s biggest road climb at 2053ft (626m) from sea level in just 6 miles (10kms) and is the closest to a Tour de France mountain stage in the UK.

Crossing the Applecross Peninsula (which is well-renowned for its magnificent scenery), the event is set in a fabulous unspoilt landscape with outstanding views of the sea and the hills.

Montane Kielder 100 MTB Race

The Montane sponsored Kielder 100 is Britain's first 100-mile, single lap, off-road mountain bike race.

The event starts in Kielder Forest in Northumberland before heading over the border to Newcastleton and involves one lap of a specially designed endurance mountain bike course featuring fire-roads, tracks and technical singletrack. This is a challenging and rewarding race for experienced bikers.

The 2009 Tour of Britain will once again take place over eight days, beginning south of the border in North Lincolnshire on Saturday 12th September, heading northwards towards Scotland and finishing in the heart of London on Saturday 19th September.

Eight exciting stages taking in many parts of the UK will once again provide close and spectacular racing. Stage Three sees the Tour head to the Scottish Borders and Dumfries & Galloway, in Scotland's south west, where the scenery will provide a stunning backdrop to complement the race excitement.

Intercontinental Rally

The rally will cover 13 special stages totalling 224 competitive kilometres, over some of the best rallying roads in Scotland. Many of the stages were previously used more than 20 years ago as part of the legendary RAC Rally: Britain’s round of the World Rally Championship. Adding to the challenge of the tricky gravel roads will be the fact that some stages will be held in the dark, possibly in uncertain weather conditions.

Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond will flag away the cars, and the first two stages of the event will be spectator superspecials at Scone Palace: the traditional home of the Kings of Scotland. On Friday 20 November the cars will complete five forest stages totalling around 100 kilometres before the finish of leg one at 18:07.

On Saturday 21 November the cars will complete six more stages, including two runs over the longest stage of the event: the 35 kilometres of Loch Ard. The rally finishes outside Stirling Castle at 16:31.

The UCAN MoG-JoG cycle ‘End to End’ Scotland

UCAN are delighted to announce the creation of Scotland’s very own ‘end to end’
cycling challenge. After a short warm up on the opening evening, a further 418 miles will be
covered over four days, with accommodation provided in a mobile ‘base camp’, with tents moved while cyclists are on the road.

Keeping away from heavy traffic, the route takes in a combination of hills & glens and the
great scenery you would expect. 2010 will be the inaugural UCAN MoG-JoG and
we anticipate heavy demand for the 30 available places. Early booking is advised.
