Alpha Mountaineering offer all aspects of mountaineering in the Scottish hills. They provide instruction and guiding in walking, scrambling and climbing, both in summer and winter. Whether you want to learn to navigate, climb a sea stack or use ice axes for the first time we can teach you the skills you need.

Nick Carter has been climbing since the early 80's. He has instructed in the outdoors for the last 12 years including working for Plas Y Brenin (The National Mountain Centre for England and Wales).

At Alpha Mountaineering we will create the course that suits you. We don't have set dates for courses, but give you some suggested course itineraries and then let you shape the course to fit your experience and aspirations.

What we do best:

Navigation is one of those skills you often don't learn until it is too late. On our navigation courses we will look at choosing the right map and how to use it. We concentrate on the essential skills like understanding contours and route choice over the terrain encountered. We will also look at the use of a compass and how to take bearings. More difficult skills like pacing and timing will also be taught. Navigation courses can be run all year round and from the lowlands to the highlands.

Scotland has 284 Munros. These 3000 feet mountains which are spread from Ben Lomond in the South to Ben Hope in the North offer the hill walker a lifetime of adventures. Maybe you want to access the more isolated hills in Knoydart or the far North West and would like your own Mountaineering Instructor to pass on their experience and navigation skills. Some hills can be accessed by spectacular scrambling routes which you would not be able to undertake without the rope work skills of an Instructor. We at Alpha Mountaineering would be glad to pass on our knowledge and expertise.
