The venue for the World Cup Mountain Bike Championships no less! Take the gondola to the top of the mountain and scream down a course which will have your eyes on stalks. If this seems a bit daring then the Witch¿s Trail offers technical cross-country riding of a lung busting nature. Leanachan also boasts family trails for those who want to enjoy the scenery at slower speeds. Bike hire is available from Nevis Range during the summer months and year round in Fort William. Make sure you experience the World Cup action. In 2002, 2003 and 2004 Fort William successfully hosted the opening events in the UCI mountain bike calendar.

What we do best:

The World Cup Cross Country course, named the Witch's Trail, is situated in Leanachan Forest and was specially constructed for the 2003 World Cup.

It tests the super fit of the World Cup circuit, a combination of fast flowing forest roads together with technical single track climbs and descents, challenging the rider's skill and courage as well as their endurance.

For a start, the Witch's Trail need not be completed like the World Cup riders where the men do five laps of the 8km loop and the ladies do three. This is not essential! It can be taken at your own pace, completing or avoiding sections as desired!

There are also a further 35km of trails around Leanachan Forest which include the popular TrailQuest route - orienteering on a bike, a hit with the younger generation! A wide variety of other gentle forestry tracks also wind their way around the forest, quickly taking you away from the crowds and into the tranquillity that typifies the Highlands.

Nevis Range is located in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, on the mountain of Aonach Mor, the eighth highest peak in Britain . Directly adjacent to Ben Nevis the centre boasts spectacular views, which on a clear day can extend as far as the Inner Hebrides.

The centre is highly accessible, being just 7 miles north of Fort William off the A82 to Inverness; it falls on one of the most travelled tourist routes through the Scottish Highlands. For more information visit their website directly.

Useful info

What do I need to wear?

You are strongly advised to wear a helmet. Also, as the West Coast of Scotland is known for it¿s tendency towards wet weather and sections of the Witch¿s Trail can get a wee bit muddy so some sort of wet weather protective clothing is advisable!

When can I do it?

The Cross Country trails are open to the public year round (excluding maintenance/event/race days) and are free of charge.

Is there a pub nearby?

Well, there is one at 650m in the Snowgoose Mountain Restaurant, only 15 minutes away courtesy of a gondola ride! Otherwise, Fort William has it¿s fair share of pubs!
