What we do best:
Mountain Gondola Access to Launch Areas:Nevis Range provides easy access to two popular launch areas via the mountain gondola. Both launch areas are 20 minutes walk from the Top Station, follow the gravelled footpaths in either direction. Nevis Range is a registered flying site and welcomes both paraglider and handglider pilots. Launch Areas: 1) Sgurr Finnis-aig: NN189 762 Alt 663m Direction NW - NNE Site hazards: If there is an increasing W component to the prevailing wind, reaching the car park becomes increasingly difficult. Beware of any changes, which often occur during early afternoon if a sea breeze develops from the west. Cables, ski installations and gondola lines. 2) Meall Beag: NN178 754 Alt 630m Direction NW - W ¿WSW Site Hazards: Turbulence around launch in stronger winds, particularly from the W ¿ WSW. Avoid flying low in the glen directly South of take off, can be rough, especially if the wind has a southerly component. Landing Areas: 1) Nevis Range Car Park: NN171 773 Alt 100m Site Hazards: Beware of turbulence on approach, particularly midday onwards on thermic days. In a strong Westerly airflow, turbulence forms behind trees to the West end of the car park. Avoid flying low over the Gondola station, there can be turbulence in that area. Gondola lines, vehicles and trees. Please do not land close to the ticket area/offices. 2) Hanglider landing area: NN181 786 Alt 144m. Vehicle access via forest tracks. Site hazards: Soft ground and small shrubs. Please drive carefully through the forest be aware of oncoming vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
Exclusion Zone: Fort William Flying Agreement
Please observe the exclusion zones (situated SW from Aonach Mor). Alcan UK (a major landowner in the area) have requested that pilots observe a voluntary exclusion zone of 750m diameter centred on NN 126 750 and 500m diameter centred on NN 137 748. It would be appreciated if all pilots flying in the area were to stay clear of the exclusion zones described above. As these areas would normally be avoided anyway the agreement should be of little inconvenience to pilots. Alcan have no wish to restrict flying activity in the Fort William area and by complying with the above request it will be possible for further areas of co-operation between pilots and this landowner to be explored. When can I do it?
The gondola is open year round; weather permitting and excluding our annual maintenance between mid November and mid December. Obviously weather is a factor! Please feel free to phone in advance of your visit as office staff can obtain wind data (speed and direction) from the Top Station.
Is there a pub nearby?
Well, there is one at 650m in the Snowgoose Mountain Restaurant! Otherwise, Fort William has it¿s fair share of pubs!
